While ordering the dissolution of marriage, the Hon Supreme Court observed that granting of permanent maintenance or alimony should not be penal. It should be for the purpose of ensuring a decent living standard for a wife. It was observed that ‘permanent alimony’ is to be granted after due consideration of social status, conduct of the parties, the parties’ life style and such ancillary factors.
